A lot of people think that the blueprint for success in MLM is sponsoring loads of people. But I disagree with that notion. I believe it is the relationships that you develop that lead to massive success. Why do I say that? Because relationships are fundamental to your downline retention. It is retention that keeps your business steady and positioned for future growth.

Retention is crucial to your business. The average retention rate for the network marketing industry is 20%*. That is like losing 8 out of every 10 people you sign up. This is why it is vital to do things such as working in depth with your group and encouraging those working to move up the ranks, being available for 3-way calls and having weekly communication with the whole group. If you do nothing but to sponsor someone, it will destroy your profits. That is because more than likely you will be spending more money than you are making just to recruit new people to replace the ones that are leaving.

Think of attrition as passing a fire bucket full of holes. No matter how much water you put into the bucket, it will always leak out the holes. So you have to continuously stop and add more water.

How do you start to strengthen the relationships with your downline in order to increase your retention? Even though relationship building is a fundamental part of recruiting and building a network marketing business, it is always good to get back to the basics. I’ve broken relationship building down into three actions.

Action #1: Getting to know the people you recruit into your MLM business.

Find out what their “WHY” is. What is it that they really want more than anything. This will help you be an effective coach when it comes to keeping your downline accountable to themselves and to their business. Care enough about the people in your downline to bring them back to what is most important (quitting their job, having a stay at home wife, buying a new house) and help guide them toward achieving those goals.

Action #2: Remember, people deserve personal attention and respect.

Remember, most of the people you will sponsor into your business are currently professional employees who are just starting to set out into the world of entrepreneurship. That means that they more than likely are just a number to a company and receive little if any respect for the work that they do or personal consideration by their boss.

It is important for the people you sponsor to know that you really do appreciate them for who they are and not just the paycheck that they provide you.

Let your downline know how much you respect their choice to make a better life for them and their families. Show them basic courtesies, thank you’s and congratulations. Do the extra little things like remembering their Birthdays and Anniversaries, thank them for their military service, etc. These are simple little touches that show you care and strengthen a relationship.

Action #3: Be of great value to them by sharing your time and knowledge.

While you need to be knowledgeable about your company and its products, you don’t want give people the impression that you are a Marketing Genius who doesn’t have time for them and who is inaccessible. Remember, people will listen to what you have to say as long they don’t feel like you are patronizing them. Always talk with them.

When the people you sponsor into your network marketing business see you as not only a leader but as a friend and confidante, you will be well on your way to having a business partner for life.

The most valuable thing you have is your time and people appreciate you sharing your time with them. I was lucky enough to be sponsored by one of the top ten money earners in my last company. While he was a great sponsor, there was a downside. He was so busy that there was a 24-48 hour turn around time to phone calls and emails. That meant you had to coordinate 3 schedules for a 3-way call and training questions were delayed. He simply did not have enough time to work effectively with the downline.

Remember that as you are building relationships, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

I have never found a truer statement that can apply to all aspects of life. It really does come down to living the Golden Rule, in that you are always willing to treat people the way you want to be treated. This truly is the foundation of relationship building.

So my challenge to you is to get to know the people you sponsor, give them the respect they deserve and bet of great value to them by sharing your time and your knowledge. As you implement these tactics, you will be on your way to beating the industry retention rate and on your way to creating financial freedom for you and your downline.

I have found that the tax benefits of a home business are own of the most overlooked aspects of a business. A great thing about internet marketing is there are so many ways you can market for free. You don’t have to use every single one of them. Get skilled with just a couple of them and you can earn a king’s ransom.

Leveraging your time is the other good thing about internet marketing. With traditional marketing techniques, you have to continuously perform the same action in order to generate leads. But with online marketing, your original marketing effort is still working long after you perform the action as long as you haven’t done it correctly. So as you continue to market online, your efforts are being compounded.

You also have to be confident enough in your business to tell the people who are closest to you about it. This does not mean bugging your friends and family until they’re avoiding your calls and pretending like they’re not home. It just means that you should share it with them. If they say no, well that’s totally fine. You just shouldn’t be ashamed of what you’re doing.

One other way to choose success is to give yourself time to win. There isn’t a business alive that can promise you wealth in a couple of months. It’s going to take some time, but believe me it’s well worth it.

Get all the negativity out of your business and don’t let people tell you you’re going to fail. If you listen to them, you will fail.

If you’re a part of a home based business, you’ve probably struggled with finding the time to work your business. Well, you’re not alone. Almost everyone I know has at one point said, “I just don’t have time!”

One thing that has been extremely helpful with me and my business has been to write down how I spend all of my time during the week. Now I don’t just mean “home” or “at work”, but every single thing that you do during the day.

For instance I found that during a certain day of the week I was watching 3 hours of TV and on another night I was just surfing the internet for a couple hours not really accomplishing anything.

I promise you that even if you have the busiest of schedules, if you do this exercise you’ll find a ton of time you never even knew you had!

Another thing you can do to find more time for your business is to get up one hour earlier in the morning or go to bed one hour later at night. Of course, I don’t want you to be dead tired during the next day but one hour isn’t really that much and you can get a lot accomplished during that time.

A lot of people find it to be very effective to work their home based business on their lunch break from work. If you get an hour for lunch you can eat for the first 15 minutes and then make calls for the last 45. You can have some good conversations in 45 minutes.

Remember that finding time to work your home based business is all a matter of desire. If you really want to make success happen, you can do it no matter what your schedule looks like while others can have a ton of time but very little desire and therefore get nothing done.

Make the choice to find the time every single day to work on building your business. A home based business is like nothing else because you build it once and it will take care of you for a very, very long time. Make some small sacrifices now for a huge payoff in the future!

Marketing Lie #1: My product/business pretty much sells itself

There isn’t a product or a business out there that is good enough to sell itself without any marketing. Let’s be real, some MLM products are just plain stupid, some are OK and some are great and guess what: you can get rich marketing any one of them!

Your product can be the greatest in all of MLM but if you’re not working for it, it won’t work for you. Period!

The same can be said for your home based business opportunity. Just because you think it’s the greatest way to make money from home out there, doesn’t mean people are going to be banging down your door begging to sign up. No matter how great your business is, it’s going to take some effort on your part.

Marketing Lie #2: So and So probably doesn’t work that much

If you’re making money in a network marketing business, you are going to be working hard! People tend to look at the top earners in their companies and for some strange reason believe that they don’t work that hard or they “just got lucky.”

They didn’t just get lucky, they set business and financial goals and worked hard to get there. No matter what they say. Success in this industry never comes without work. Look at the top earners in your company as examples of what can happen when you work hard, set a goal and stop thinking they just got a lucky break.

Marketing Lie #3: I don’t have to improve myself

Everyone needs to do little things every month, every week and every day to improve themselves. Nobody is excluded from this. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with you, but there is always room for improvement. If you’re not working on yourself, your MLM business isn’t going to grow. At least not at the rate you want it to.

Marketing Lie #4: People won’t say “no” to me

Let me be blunt. You’re going to hear “no” a lot! Hearing the word no doesn’t mean that your business isn’t good or your product stinks. It just means that the person you’re talking to isn’t interested. Anyone who has had any kind of success in a home-based business has heard the word no multiple times. Get use to it, embrace it even. It has nothing to do with you it’s just the nature of the beast.

Marketing Lie #5: I’ll be quitting my job next month

There is no such thing as overnight success. I’m not saying that you can’t speed the process along. But the fact of the matter is, that it’s going to take a while to see huge success. So don’t go telling your co-workers, your spouse and especially your boss that you’ll be leaving before you’ve even got your first check. It’s just best for everyone.

It’s awesome to shoot for greatness. Just don’t make your goals so high that when you don’t meet them you get discouraged and want to quit.

Marketing Lie #6: My business will build itself

This is a lot like the first lie but it’s worth saying again. NO business will 100% build itself. Sure there are ways you can automate your business and take a bit off your shoulders but it IS going to require some work on your part. Don’t let anyone tell you different.

Just because your home based business isn’t a job, doesn’t mean it doesn’t need structure. You can’t go weeks or even days upon days without working your MLM business and you can’t work 30 hours one week and 3 the next.

Your home based business needs some sort of structure if it’s really going to work for you. Of course, the beauty of working from home is you can fit that schedule around your life and the life of your family. Just don’t get too loosey-goosey with it.

By creating your own product (usually like a free report or an E-book) and setting up a website to give it away for free, your opt-in list will grow by leaps and bounds! You’ll also, of course, have to make sure the product you give away is something that has something to do with working from home. That way your prospects will be targeted!

Don’t worry about bugging people with your emails because at the bottom of every email your auto-responder sends out there will be an opt-out link. That way the only people who stay on your list are the people who are really interested.

Finally, once you’ve set up your free product page and your business squeeze pages you’ll need to promote, promote, promote! If you don’t promote your websites, nobody (or very few) will ever find them. Use free sites like network marketing forums, Twitter, MySpace, FaceBook, You Tube and article websites to get the word out about your pages and you’ll have tons of free prospects in no time!

Look, your upline probably can’t change things anyway, and honestly, it’s just gonna bring them down. So don’t do it!

#4 If you listen to stories of failure.

It’s true that for every 10 success stories in MLM there are about 100 stories of people who tried and failed. Don’t listen to them!

#5 If you focus on the details.
